Types of Burl Wood
Burls can form in many types of wood, and we offer several different choices for our custom burl furniture. You can learn more about burl wood and the types of wood we offer on our burl wood page.
Redwood burl is highly sought after by custom furniture makers and DIY woodworkers worldwide. It is a particularly popular choice due to the unique color of the wood and the massive size these trees can grow. Although old-growth redwood is especially scarce, we have a large stock available to build our burl wood furniture. All our redwood is ethically sourced – we don’t cut down any living trees to produce our redwood furniture. The wood slabs we use in our redwood furniture are salvaged from logs and stumps left behind from logging operations several decades ago. This is the most environmentally friendly way to acquire old-growth redwood and helps ensure the protection of the old growth forests that remain today.
Maple Burl wood Furniture
Maple burl is also well known for its unique color and character. The wood is usually lighter in color than redwood or walnut. Because of the unusual shape and texture of these burls, they are a popular choice for live edge tables.
Claro Walnut Furniture
Claro walnut is a common name used in the woodworking industry for two species of walnut native to Northern California. This wood is usually very highly figured and may have a marbled appearance. The color of this wood can be highly variable but is usually a rich chocolate brown. Claro walnut burl adds a rustic warmth to our burl wood furniture and is perfect for more modern pieces like the live edge table pictured.
Live Edge Table
A live edge table is one of our most popular custom wood furniture pieces. We build these tables from live edge burl wood slabs, incorporating the natural edge of the wood into the design of the table. When finishing these slabs, we remove the bark and sand the edges to remove any splinters or rough areas but leave the natural shape of the raw edge intact. This gives each of our tables a unique shape and emphasizes the natural beauty of the wood.
Live edge coffee tables are one of the more common uses for our wood slabs. However, there are many more options for a live edge table. Most live edge slabs will have a distinct and uniquely shaped edge, but some are more squared off and subtle. We can create a live edge table in almost any dimensions and shape, from small end tables to large conference tables.
We can custom build bed frames in a variety of styles. The example is shown features a live edge wood slab headboard – this piece is a beautiful example of redwood lace burl. We can also build platform beds using burl wood slabs for a more modern look. We can build rustic beds in any size or style – even bunk beds! More examples of our work can be found in our furniture makers gallery of rustic beds.
Custom Bathroom Vanities and Mirrors
A rustic wood vanity is a perfect touch to any bathroom decor. We offer a number of different styles – the example pictured is a hanging vanity built from a burl wood slab. For a more traditional look, however, you might prefer a log vanity or one with a rustic pedestal base.
To match your new wood vanity, we suggest a burl wood mirror. These mirrors are built with burl wood frames and are a beautiful addition to any room. Check out the vanities and mirrors in our designer’s gallery for more information.
Our custom built solid wood chairs come in a variety of styles. The rustic wood rocking chair shown below features redwood burl slabs as the seat and back and juniper log arms. We can build rocking chairs, desk chairs, dining table and chair sets, thrones and more. Burl wood chairs are the perfect way to bring a touch of rustic warmth to your living room, dining room, office or cabin.
